Volume II
Trevor is currently working on the second volume of ‘Small Town Saturday Night’ which will be published in the Autumn of 2008. It continues the story of how Halifax miraculously played host to over 50 number one artists in the decade of the sixties. This volume concentrates on the 3 major dancehalls of the town, the artists who performed and the competition between them. It features amongst many others Herman's Hermits and the Kinks who both appeared in the ballrooms the VERY day that their first record hit number one in the charts. American visitors include Clarence 'Frogman' Henry and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Virtually ALL the the Joe Meek roster of artists played in the town and read how Screaming Lord Sutch fell in love with a Halifax girl. A special in depth look at Champion Jack Dupree's life in Halifax, more local group features and an overview of the Victoria Theatre in the 70's along with the only photograph (unpublished) taken of Michael Jackson backstage!!
Can You Help?
The search goes on for more unpublished photographs of the dancehall days. Do you have a photograph of PEARL PALIN who ran the Princess Ballroom? A shy woman who spurned all publicity and destroyed all her own photographs from the sixties when she divorced her husband Bert and left the town at the end of the decade. She was a prolific dance teacher and there must be photographs of her presenting prizes etc to her star pupils. PLEASE get in touch if you can help!!
We are also looking for any photographs taken in the Alexandra Hall, the Marlborough Hall and the Princess Ballroom during the 60's. If they show the groups or dance bands even better!

The production crew from My Yorkshire and presenter Ian Clayton spent two days filming in Halifax as they followed Trevor around the town centre and visited the venues and dancehalls of the town for the new series of the show. The filming also took place in Krumlin at the site of the disastrous Yorkshire Folk Blues and Jazz Festival held in August 1970. |
